Whole Grain Goodness in Every Bite

imageOur granddaughter asks for peanut butter toast –adding “be sure it’s Papa’s special bread.” Wise child, although I’m not sure how it became Papa’s special bread. Meeting Renee’, a neighbor picking up her Bulk Natural Foods (we are a host home) order early last year, began a new friendship and my journey into bread baking from freshly milled grain. Shelves in my garage are now home to buckets of grains and legumes. Renee’ and her friend Cathy’s book, Whole Grains the Easy Way, got me started. This book tells the whole grain story in simplicity and includes recipes that assure your success. It is available at Footsteps In Eden. Investment: $5.

Even the so called healthiest processed grains and breads we purchase at the grocery store are so stripped of their nutrients. I knew this, but reading and seeing first hand just how stripped those “healthy” products are, convinced me to take that first step. There is so much I would love to share about this. Instead, I suggest Renee’ and Cathy’s book (no personal profit in that for me, btw) and the following websites. You’ll find they have done all the work already. You’ll learn much more there than I can share in a few paragraphs here. These sites provide information on using the grains in truly healthy ways. You’ll learn about making breads like “Papa’s Special Bread” and many more ways to prepare and serve whole grain goodness to your family.
Recipes are included in these links and in the book!

imageThis photo was snapped as I prepared to mill Ezekiel pancake and waffle mix. This part of the journey is a new trail for me. Waffle Wednesdays are special at our home. We’ve been using a “natural” prepared mix for these, and we were delighted to make this healthy exchange. YUM!!! Don’t believe we will be eating it lying down, though, as Ezekiel was instructed to do.

Ezekiel 4:9 “Get a large bowl. Then mix together wheat, barley, beans, lentils, and millet, and make some bread. This is what you will eat for the three hundred ninety days you are lying down.”

Renee’ and another of her friends, Dian McDaniel, have been invited to share a presentation on bread baking at Rosebriar Dining in the Country (Eads, TN) this Spring. A date has not been set. However, you may visit Rosebriar’s website. Send an email to Debbie (owner) from the site and let her know you would like to be informed when this will be taking place.
