“Post-Vacation Thoughts” was my chosen topic today. I say, “was,” because it quickly became apparent that what I really needed after a “relaxing” vacation was a return to healthy eating and a great reflexology session — and, well, maybe some rest, too.
I believe we are all, all too familiar with that scenario; so, I’m choosing to focus on smoothies — refreshingly awesome drinks that pass for a meal. I’m including a few hints that may help make them be healthy ones. (And it sounds like a cool transition of topics to me. Smiley face here.)
1. Adding sugar, ice cream, sweetened fruit juices, and flavored yogurts add unnecessary calories and fat. Use fruit and/or veggies and ice only or opt to add plain yogurt or plain kefir. I personally prefer the Greek style yogurt and choose organic whenever possible.
2. Know the dirty dozen list for fruits and veggies. Some of our favorites are heavily laden with pesticides (not healthy for humans and other living creatures). You’ll find the list of both the clean and dirty for 2013 at this link.
3. Eating the recommended 2-4 servings (1/2 cup each) of fruit and 3-5 of vegetables isn’t always an easy task. Smoothies are a great way to incorporate them into your healthy eating plan.
4. Find some yummy recipes or make up your own to enjoy this cool refreshment. Looking for some recipes? Here are links to a few sites for healthy ones. For any recipes you may find with less than healthy ingredients — just make simple substitutes.
