Seasonal Bounty: Fresh Pears

imageMy home plays host to Bulk Natural Foods a couple of times each month — one pick up point for their customer’s to choose. It’s so awesome to get all kinds of produce in bulk, in season, organic or minimally sprayed, and at great prices, too. Yesterday’s delivery was peaches, pears, and plums. I chose the pears, and now I’m wondering what exactly to do with all of them. On my quest for fresh pear recipes, I’ve found a couple websites with some great ideas!

imageMartha Stewart features chocolate dipped pears, and I do love chocolate! But I believe I will be making the Pear and Granola Muffins. Click on Martha’s name to get this recipe and the chocolate one, too.

And then I found Pear Panache’s website. Oh my goodness, what an interesting collection of pear recipes. I would love to try them all. I’m sure I’ll begin with the Bacon and Blue Cheese Sliders with Pear Ketchup. Thinking I will use my own rolls made from my own bread, made using freshly milled flour. image

Of course, I’m sure I will can a few, and I’m thinking Pear Butter. Found recipes for these, too, at Pick Your Own’s website.

For those wishing to learn more about Bulk Natural Food’s co-op, click on the link to visit their website. An apple order is scheduled for delivery the first weekend in October, and should be announced on their website in the next few days if it isn’t there already. Whole grains and other dry goods are available year round. They have host homes all over Tennessee, including several in the Memphis area.

And if you are interested in milling your own grain and baking your own bread, stay tuned for future posts where we’ll share more on the benefits and the process.
