Reflexology for Pain Management: Science and Testimony Both Say It Helps

MH900426560Recently on my Facebook page I posted an article on a study that was done to verify if reflexology is indeed helpful for pain relief. The conclusion was in the affirmative. One client commented, “Lynn, I could have told you that!” The next day I had an opportunity to share reflexology self-help tips with a group at Saille Healing Path. One question asked me went something like this: “What is the most common reason people come to you?” There are of course many reasons, but one that stands out in my mind is pain management.

Occasionally the results I’ve seen in my practice have bordered on the miraculous, where acute or chronic pain was relieved in one session. More often a consistent regular pattern of sessions scheduled 1 to 2 weeks apart over a period of time brings the results. The benefits of reflexology are cumulative. Most of us allow our challenges to build up over a period of time. Therefore, it takes a period of time to relieve them as well. That’s a tough call in our instant gratification culture. Some treatments may offer immediate but temporary relief that masks the symptoms without eliminating the underlying cause. Alternative and complementary modalities like reflexology may bring you a more permanent solution over a period of time.

Pain challenges have many faces. The pain could be debilitating headaches, fibromyalgia, joint pain, plantar fasciitis, and the list goes on and on. It’s been an awesome privilege to see clients with all of these challenges, and more, find relief through reflexology. Those stories are the testimonial evidence. While many folks want to see scientific proof, those of you who have been helped through reflexology have stories to tell! That’s the real proof in my mind.

How about sharing some of those stories. We would love to hear them and with your permission include them in a future blog post and on our testimonials page. Please email them to footstepsineden@gmail.com, and include whether we have your permission to share. (We will use first names only.)

The study mentioned above is from the University of Portsmouth. In the beginning of my presentation last night I had shared about this study. It was certainly a blessing to then be able to connect the dots on this to say that many people do seek out reflexology for pain management. You may read the whole article by clicking here. One brief quote from their findings:

“The researchers found that when the participants received reflexology prior to the session they were able to keep their hand in the ice water for longer before they felt pain, and that they could also tolerate the pain for a longer period of time.”

Many of my clients would agree!
