The Scents of Learning

Another BIG Thank You, to Connie Scheel for sharing her essential oil tips with Footsteps In Eden Reflexology.

Imagine yourself preparing for a test or working on a deadline for a project. Your brain races, or maybe it goes blank. You don’t know where to start, or you’re not sure if you can remember the answers. Now picture your child in this situation. Do you wish for a safe and natural boost of energy, productivity or mental clarity for yourself and your child? Essential oils can help both of you!

Our sense of smell is one of our strongest senses and is the best way to influence our brain activity. “Olfactory bulbs are part of the limbic system and directly connect to the areas of the brain that process emotion and learning. This is one of the reasons why so often something that we smell will trigger a memory or remind us of something or someone,” says Beverley Hawkins, owner of the Vancouver-based West Coast Institute of Aromatherapy.”( 6 Scents That Can Transform Mood and Productivity, Entrepreneur magazine)

Do you associate any scents with learning? What are your favorite scents? One my favorite scents is fresh coffee grounds because it brings back sweet memories of my Nana. I also love the smell of lilacs, the ocean, and Christmas trees. Each of these scents invigorate and soothe me simultaneously. That’s the power of smell!

As a new school year is upon us in the Mid-South, parents can use this power of smell to boost their child’s brain power and enhance their learning experiences with essential oils. As you may recall from other recent articles, essential oils also bring the bonus of anti-viral, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties which will also keep families well. Isn’t it wonderful all the angles the natural works through essential oils?

When choosing essential oils (EO), for children and adults, I recommend starting with single plant oils and carefully experimenting with what works best for you. You may find that peppermint essential oil is particularly helpful when you’re working on a deadline, but lemon essential oil helps you concentrate better. One of the simplest ways to use EOs while at work or in school is to place 1 or 2 drops on a tissue and keep it in your pocket. When you need a brain boost cover your nose and mouth the tissue and take a couple deep slow breaths. Enjoy the EO experimenting!

Peppermint EO is an energy booster that stimulates your concentration and ability to think clearly. Lemon EO calms feelings of anxiety while enhancing concentration. The Young Living blend of Brain Power clarifies thoughts and helps you develop deeper focus. This blend is for children at least 5 years old, and adults.

Another blend called Clarity promotes mental sharpness and is energizing. “A study performed by Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati found that inhaling peppermint oil increased the mental accuracy of students by 28 percent. Clarity can also be used to help restore mental alertness or wakefulness when you are experiencing fatigue or drowsiness.”, YoungLiving.com

My oldest niece is starting Second grade soon, and she’s looking forward to trying out Lemon and Peppermint essential oils to help her stay calm and do better in math. We’d love to hear how you and your child use these suggestions, and what results you experience. Please share a comment on this blog or Footsteps in Eden’s Facebook page.
